It is the spring of 1890.Three eight-year-old girls leave overcrowded, bleak Greystone orphanage near Boston and set out together on the “Orphan Train” heading West to adoptive homes. Left at Greystone by her actress mother, exuberant Toddy joins the household of Octavia Hale, a wealthy, reserved widow who seeks a companion for her invalid granddaughter, Helene. Before long, Toddy wins their hearts and transforms their gloomy home with her bright optimism. As the years pass, Toddy proves to be a godsend for Helene and also brings much joy to Mrs. Hale. Yet happiness eludes Toddy. Vindictive words spoken long ago by Mrs. Hale’s brusque maid still echo in her mind “Just becuz Miss Helene took a fancy to you don’t mean you’re special, cause you ain’t … If anything happens to her, you’d be out on your ear, quicker’n you can say Jack Robinson!”

I wasn't sure if I was going to enjoy this book, because of the bad review I had seen. Because I have always been intrigued by stories of the orphan trains, I decided to read it anyway. I'm glad now that I did. This was an interesting story, which begins with a 5-year-old girl who is left at the orphanage by her vaudeville performing mother. After 3 years, the child is considered abandoned, and is put on the orphan train to be adopted, along with her closest friends. The 3 girls have a plan to be sure to be adopted in the same town, where they can continue their friendship.Product details

Great book. After reading the previous book, I felt that this one had too many chapters (about 6) that were so much like that book. I had to stop and read another book before I could continue.
But after just a few day, I continued to read and was caught up in Toddy's story and not wanting to put the book down.
Very well written.
You don't have to read this series in order but often it helps if you do - just know that this one does contain a lot of the previous book - in the beginning. But after that, it is an entirely new story.
